Today’s music comes from the vibrant islands of Polynesia. Traditionally, the music would remain unwritten, being passed down with dance from generation to generation. Hymns brought over by Christian missionaries in the 1790s have had the largest impact on Polynesian music, as native music was prohibited. Instruments typical of this genre include ukulele, nose flute, slack-key guitar, percussion instruments made from gourds, jaw harp, and slit drums. Colonial influence has resulted in the modern adaptation of the Spanish guitar and brass instruments. Notable Polynesian artists include Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, Te Ava Piti, Opetaia Foa'i, and Peter Moon.
