Today’s music is called Appalachian Folk, or “mountain music” as it is also known. Originating in the Appalachian region of the Eastern US, this music is derived from the ballads, hymns, and fiddle music of the British Isles. Genres included here are blues, country, bluegrass, and gospel reflecting the region's unique cultural heritage. Typical instruments include fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, washboard, jaw harp, and spoons. Some notable Appalachian artists include Doc Watson, Hazel Dickens, Rosecoe Holcomb, Jean Ritchie, and the Carter Family. Both Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn were influenced by this music and culture.
